When people hear "rebrand," they usually think of a new logo and a fresh colour palette. I used to think that too, until I went through a business rebrand myself. Rebranding Backdrop Collective wasn't just about how we look. It marked a real shift in how I see this business, and where I want to take it next.
What a Business Rebrand Really Means
A business rebrand isn't just a visual refresh. It's a business telling itself, and everyone watching, that it's ready for its next chapter. For us, that meant stepping back and asking a hard question: does this brand actually reflect who we are now, and who we want to work with going forward?
The answer was no. So we got to work.
Why We Rebranded Backdrop Collective
We Outgrew Our Old Look
Backdrop Collective started small. I was figuring things out as I went, printing backdrops and learning what our customers actually needed along the way. Since then, we've grown a lot. Our range has expanded, we now print everything in house right here in Melbourne, and our customers have grown right alongside us.
Our old branding was built for a business we'd already outgrown. It served us well, but it no longer told the full story of who we'd become.
It Was Time Our Brand Matched Our Ambition
I want Backdrop Collective to work with higher-level businesses and clients, the kind of photographers, creators and agencies who expect a brand that looks as professional as the products it sells. Our old look wasn't doing that work for us anymore. It was time for our brand to catch up to our ambition.
The Hardest Part Was Being Too Close to It
Here's something I didn't expect. As a graphic designer, I assumed rebranding my own business would be the easy part. It's what I do for clients all the time. It turned out to be the opposite.
It's almost like you're too close to home. When it's your own brand on the line, every decision feels bigger. I found it genuinely hard to make those calls and stick to them. I knew roughly what I wanted, but knowing and deciding are two very different things.
Doing this as a team made all the difference. I couldn't have designed this alone, and I don't think I should have tried to. Having the whole team weigh in helped me see things I couldn't see on my own. Now I finally understand how my clients have felt for all these years, sitting on the other side of a big decision like this one.
Choosing Colours That Still Feel Like Us
The colours took longer than I'll admit. We tested more shades than I care to count, holding them up against everything, starting over more than once, because close enough was never going to be good enough.
What mattered most to me was keeping our essence intact. Our brand has always been a little soft, a little fun, and I didn't want to lose that in the process. So every colour we landed on had to do two things at once: feel more professional, and still feel like us.
I love where we ended up. The colours are stunning, and as a whole, it's still very much Backdrop Collective. Just with a bit more of a professional lift.
What's Changed, and What Hasn't
New Logo, New Colours, New Confidence
You'll notice the new logo, the new palette, and a brand that finally looks like the level we've always been working towards. It's a look built for the next chapter of this business.
Same In-House Melbourne Printing You've Always Trusted
What hasn't changed is everything you already trust us for. We still print everything in house, right here in Melbourne. Same crease-resistant, waterproof products. Same team who picks up the phone when you call. The look is new. The quality and the service behind it never wavered.
What This Rebrand Means for You
If you're a photographer, it means working with a supplier whose brand finally matches the calibre of work you deliver to your own clients.
If you're a content creator or small business owner, it means a partner that looks as premium as the imagery you're trying to create.
If you're an agency or designer reselling our products, it means handing your clients a brand you can stand behind with full confidence, from the products to the packaging.

The Next Chapter Starts Now
Rebranding Backdrop Collective taught me that milestones like this aren't really about the logo at all. They're about deciding, on purpose, who you want to be next. I'm proud of where we've landed, and I'm even more excited about what it means for the businesses we get to work with going forward.
Come see the new look for yourself. Explore our range of photography backdrops, browse our custom decals, or check out our signage options, all printed the same way we always have, right here in Melbourne.
