How to Maintain and Store Photography Backdrops
Whether you're a seasoned content creator or just getting started with product photography, vinyl photography backdrops are a total game-changer. They're durable, easy to clean, and perfect for small studios or at-home setups. But to keep your backdrop looking fresh and photo-ready, it's important to store it the right way. In this post, we’ll cover how to store your backdrops (including double-sided backdrops), handle them properly, and keep them in top shape between shoots.

The best tools and hacks for storage
Unpacking your vinyl backdrop
When your new vinyl backdrop arrives, it’ll most likely be rolled up in a tube (ours always are!). This keeps it protected during shipping and makes it super easy to store later.
1. Roll the backdrop in the opposite direction
This trick is a lifesaver. If your backdrop is curling, just flip the backdrop so the printed side is on the outside and roll it up again in the opposite direction. Let it sit like that in the tube or flat on the table for a few minutes and the curve will relax out.
2. Tape it down
In a rush? No worries—just tape the backdrop flat to your shooting surface using low-tack tape like our Backdrop Tape or painter’s tape. You can also use clamps if you're shooting on a tabletop.
3. Hang em’ out
If you’ve got time, hang your backdrop from a clothes rail using clips or hangers. The curve will naturally drop out over time - plus, it doubles as a great way to store them when not in use.
4. Lie flat
Laying the backdrop flat on a table or floor works too. It might take a bit longer, but it’s great if you’re not in a rush and want it to sit completely flat for shooting.
Handling and maintaining vinyl backdrops
Vinyl is strong, but it’s still a printed material, so a little care goes a long way. Here are some simple do's and don’ts:
-
✅ Gently wipe with a soft, damp cloth to clean
-
✅ Store it rolled or hung up—never folded
-
❌ Don’t use harsh chemicals or scrub the printed surface
-
❌ Keep away from heat sources or anything sharp
Double-sided backdrops should always be handled with clean hands to avoid smudging or scratching either side.
Using Vinyl Backdrops
There are so many ways to get creative with vinyl backdrops—especially if you're shooting products, flat-lays, or styled scenes.
-
Use flat on a table for a clean flat-lay backdrop
-
Tape it to a wall for background shots
-
Wrap it around surfaces for seamless looks
Using Two Backdrops
Want to level up your product photography? Try using two backdrops at once—one for the base and one for the background. You can match them, mix textures, or go for bold contrast. For example:
-
Same texture = a subtle, clean look
-
Complimentary colours = warm and styled
-
Contrasting designs = bold, scroll-stopping shots
This works especially well with product photography backdrops where you're shooting small items and need a styled setup that stands out.
Storage & Care Tips for Your Reusable Vinyl Backdrop
Proper storage = longer life for your backdrops. Here are a few simple, space-saving ways to store them when you’re not shooting:
-
Roll and re-tube: Always roll with the printed side facing out and pop it back into its original tube
-
Loose roll with low-tack tape: Reduces curl and is great if you use it often
-
Flat storage: If you have the space, store flat between foam boards or simply slide under your bed or bench!
-
Hanger hack: Clip to trouser hangers and hang on a clothes rail—perfect if you have a big collection and want to see all your options quickly
Just make sure to remove any tape after each use so it doesn’t leave marks over time.
